Am I OK? (2022)

Hard to think that Dakota Johnson can do this and still make the likes of that Marvel abortion she was in recently.

Admittedly, I only watched that because she was in it, and she looked truly lovely, but here, she is another kettle of fish entirely, swimming in an indie that she also produced. It could have been (and arguably was) made for her.

Here she takes on the role of Lucy, receptionist at a classy massage therapists office by day and genuinely confused teetering bi-sexual woman by night. Having no experience of another woman, she shuns traditional relationships with well-meaning suitors. Whilst thinking she knows what she wants, it seems clear she defintely knows what she doesn't.

One of Johnson's great talents is to pull off the girl next door with such effectiveness, you can easily forget she his actually trying to portray anything other than herself. This appears to come across as second nature. Who knows, she might be a real bitch in reality. If anything though, that makes her performances all the more impressive.

She chastises herself for not being in more control of something as apparently simple as her sexuality, already in her early thirties, and this undermines many of the relationships in her life, not least with best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) who is driven professionally and wants only the very best for Lucy. If only we all had friends as good as these two.

Overall, this is relatively uneventful, with huge dollops of exposition which is well-written and authentic, it seems. from a psychological perspective. I am in no way qualified to comment, really, but it comes across as perfectly believable. It's intermittently funny, as the tragedy of the this poor girls' lot just won't quit. You still get the impression that the only thing really holding her back from happiness is herself, however, even if you really want to give her a huge hug.
