Golden Globes 2022 - Sweeping Under the (no-red)Carpet

Hi all, this is a rundown of the results of this years biggest non-event in the industry and my honest, immediate thoughts pertaining to them. We're going to do the same for BAFTAs and the Oscars when their time comes, so get used to it. Apologies in advance if this goes on a bit, but there is quite a bit to go through. I'm going to leave the politics aside, as a results round-up doesn't really warrant my thoughts on the HFPA. Right, let's get to it...

Drama Motion Picture

Winner - The Power of the Dog

Dune

Belfast

King Richard

CODA

My Pick - King Richard

Of what was nominated, I have only got around to seeing Dune and King Richard (you can my review on these very pages), so really comment on the validity of this choice. So I woon;t dawdle over it. I will certainly have seen them all by the time the Oscar nominations are announced, of course.

Actor in a Drama Motion Picture

Winner - Will Smith/King Richard

Benedict Cumberbatch/The Power of the Dog

Mahershala Ali/Swan Song

Javier Bardem/Being the Ricardos

Denzel Washington/The Tragedy of Macbeth

My Pick - Will Smith/King Richard

Again, having not seen all of the nominated efforts, I have to go with what I have seen, and this was a close one for me personally, but I think Will Smith just edges it from Mahershala Ali, who I very nearly chose instead for Swan Song.

Animated Feature Film

Winner - Encanto

Luca

Flee

Raya The Last Dragon

My Sunny Maad

My Pick - Encanto

Encanto is the only one on the list I have seen so far, so it has to get my vote. Disney has its grip pretty firmly on this by all accounts, but did it really have much competition?

Actress in a Drama Motion Picture

Winner - Nicole Kidman/Being The Ricardos

Jessica Chastain/The Eyes of Tammy Faye

Lady Gaga/The House of Gucci

Olivia Colman/The Lost Daughter

Kristen Stewart/Spencer

My Pick - Kristen Stewart/Spencer

This was a really tricky one. There a some great performances in here. Encompassing a famous person is particularly difficult and I think Stewart edges out Kidman for her portrayal of Diana Spencer. Saying this, Colman, Gaga and Chastain (I'm told) are all solid too.

Drama TV Series

Winner - Succession

Lupin

The Morning Show

Pose

Squid Game

My Pick - Squid Game

Not seen it, so can't say really. Only thing on here I have come across is Squid Game, which I loved, so had to vote for it.

Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture

Winner - Kodi Smit-McPhee/The Power of the Dog

Troy Kotsur/CODA

Ben Affleck/The Tender Bar

Jamie Dornan/Belfast

Ciaran Hinds/Belfast

My Pick - Ben Affleck/The Tender Bar

Ignorance stops me from picking anyone apart from Affleck was who great.

Original Song

Winner - Billie Eilish - No Time To Die

Yep, no arguments from me here. May as well have been the only nomination in the list.

Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture

Winner - Ariana DeBose/West Side Story

Kirsten Dunst/The Power of the Dog

Ruth Negga/Passing

Aunjanue Eliss/King Richard

Caitriona Balfe/Belfast

Musical or Comedy Motion Picture

Winner - West Side Story

Don't Look Up

Tick, Tick...Boom!

Licorice Pizza

Cyrano

My Pick - Don't Look Up

Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture

Winner - Rachel Zegler/West Side Story

Emma Stone/Cruella

Marion Cotillard/Annette

Alana Haim/Licorice Pizza

Jennifer Lawrence/Don't Look Up

My Pick - Jennifer Lawrence/Don't Look Up

Actor in a Musical or Comedy Film

Winner - Andrew Garfield/Tick, Tick...Boom!

Anthony Ramos/In The Heights

Leonardo Di Caprio/Don't Look Up

Cooper Hoffman - Licorice Pizza

Peter Dinklage - Cyrano

My Pick - Andrew Garfield/Tick, Tick...Boom!

Director of a Motion Picture

Winner - Jane Campion/The Power of the Dog

Kenneth Branagh/Belfast

Denis Villeneuve/Dune

Maggie Gyllenhaal/The Lost Daughter

Steven Spielberg/West Side Story

My Pick - Maggie Gyllenhaal/The Lost Daughter
