Greedy People (2024)

Sometimes you can get completely sideswiped by a project that ends up nothing like you imagine it would be. Greedy People is bursting with character, some of them even likeable, but the admirable world-building on display is immediately accessible.

Darkly comic like the Coens in general and perhaps Fargo in particular, this stars Himesh Patel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lily James, centering on a sleepy small island community when the world turns upside down, one very unfortunate day.

Characterisation is good enough to be almost pulled straight out of real life and Mike Vukadinovich has captured all of the inadequacies, quirks and foibles of small town life and small town thinking.. The performances from the main players are great and they are supported ably by the rest of the talent, Joey Lawrence Adams being a particular treat.

A series of unfortunate events leads to an accidental murder and the discovery of a million dollars. Two policemen responsible then hatch a plan to cover up their grave mistakes, taking the ill-gotten gains with them. While the setup is quite simple, almost ordinary, the characters are engaging enough to keep you sitting in your seat, just to see what a web is woven in the practice of deceit.

It's ultimately silly, however, with an unbelievable, convoluted plot that's just so crazy and unlikely, it might just be true. Stranger than fiction, an' that. Worth a viewing certainly. Whilst it won't win many awards, it is helplessly enjoyable and entertaining, nonetheless.
