Hypnotic (2021)

I'm clearly not as suggestable as some of the good doctors' victims here. Whilst I enjoy a decent thriller steeped in potential reality more than fantasy, the script and acting in some quarters was not good enough to make me invest in the story. It did make me think about checking my kitchen cupboards before I go to bed at night, however.

Something about Jason O'Mara's performance just seems a bit off kilter and I can't quite put my finger on what it is. He just doesn't pull off charming lunatic quite well enough.

The by now seemingly very busy Kate Siegel is still benefitting from being featured often in Mike Flanagan's outstanding television projects of late such as Hill House and Midnight Mass, but there is already a question of her ability featuring in things that don't go bump in the night and whether she is actually any more than a scream queen with attitude.

This is a fairly safe venture for all concerned, featuring as it does a nice idea and a competent cast, all directed by the numbers. It has its moments but the plot is derivative and lacks any imagination. Essentially, take out the somewhat novel hypnotherapy angle and you've seen this many times before.
