The Fall Guy (2024)

Right about now, I imagine Ryan Gosling actually thinks he's Lee Majors, but this is far removed from the television show of the same name on which it is (loosely) based. I don't think there is a bigger movie star on the planet right now, for box office, at least, with his popularity frankly off the chart, so you really couldn't blame him for thinking the sun actually might shine out of his own backside.

And if that wasn't enough, throw in Emily Blunt for good measure. Mrs Krasinski has her own reasons for thinking that she too is the bees knees, making this partnership, and more importantly the timing, something of a home run.

If you can imagine the common sense behind the making of Knight & Day with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz or Mr & Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie then you're in the right marketing ballpark - two superstars at the peak of their careers whose every other film is probably better than this, but this is the moneymaker, the movie they will both be happy with, to be in the lofty position of not needing to audition for and can just walk in, shine and bask in the box office receipts, but are both probably far less proud of than the rest of their body of work.

Far from bad, of course, this is merely a light-hearted/expensive action/love story/adventure/comedy covering as many genres as possible for completely avaricious reasons. It no doubt cost an arm and a leg to get this made with Blunt and Gosling attached, so can we really blame Universal for wanting to get at least a couple of fingers of profit in return?

The whole thing is harmless and as expected, phenomenally good-looking, like every dollar was shown on screen, after the salaries of the stars was taken into consideration. It's really a couple of hours of fluff which is well-written enough for its target audience, but I would be tempted to say there were better lines in Jungle Cruise, another blunt/action (Dwayne Johnson) hero project that made a bucktonne of wonga.

About as box-office friendly as it is possible to make a movie, unapologetically cheesy and cliched but no less fun for it. The cinephiles will see it for what it is and hopefully will let it roll over them without too much fuss. Sometimes you just need pizza, even if you wouldn't normally touch the stuff.
