Twisters (2024)

I should start this really by qualifying my standpoint on the general pursuit of natural phenomenon that can kill you in the blink of an eye. It's a foolhardy notion and comes up just below going into the cabin in the woods as a group of american teenagers on vacation in the grand pantheon of utterly stupid things to be doing.

Frankly, I don't know why you would even think about it, much less actually do it. Throw yourself out of a plane, go squirrel jumping. Both likely to kill you if unlucky, but this is lunacy on a grand and pointless scale. I also wouldn't climb Everest. I already know it's there from a suitably safe distance.

This is inarguably entertaining, however and Daisy Edgar-Jones is as watchable here as anywhere else. Glen Powell cements what has been a very successful year for him and we're only still in August. Never mind that I don't understand the reason for his rising stardom, except by my peers who appear to be thirsting over him for some reason. Hey, not for me to say. He's not my cup of tea generally, but he does have a winning smile, I s'pose. It's nice to look at but wholly overlong for what it is.

All power to you if you can make a two hour feature film out of chasing something and then running away from it, repeatedly, for what appears to be no real sensible reason. But here we are. There are bangs and crashes, extreme weather aplenty and a suitable amount of (self-inflicted, let's be honest) good old fashioned peril, as bodies are tossed hither and yon like stick figures in all manner of directions. And yet they still come back and do it again. then they run away again. Hmmm...

It boasts a cracking soundtrack which suits the mood perfectly - hick country lemmings putting themselves in harm's way for no reason. This is country, and most of these characters may know their own sisters a little too well. Probably why they're chasing tornados. Everything starts to make sense, all of a sudden. Fun to watch if you want to see stupid people doing stupid things and then regretting it almost immediately, unless they're too stupid to even do that.
