Well, there we have it. This year, like most years, is a mixture of personal favourites doing well, but maybe not as as well as we would hope. The runaway winner was Oppenheimer, with seven wins in total. Deserving as it was, it still feels like it's a bit greedy and obvious, lavishing it with such abundant praise where there was the opportunity to recognise others. Personally, I would have liked The Zone of Interest to do better, along with Anatomy of a Fall, as they were my two favourite movies of last year, with Oppenheimer coming a close third, but third nonetheless, so I can't be too annoyed by the Academy choices.
I was as surprised as Emma Stone at her win, when Lily Gladstone was probably favourite to pick up Best Actress. I hoped Sandra Huller would pip them both, but not to be, it seems, for the Academy who are still maybe not yet ready in that regard. I was also disappointed that given that Spiderman didn't romp the animated feature, that my favourite Nimona didn't win either, both pipped by The Boy & The Heron, which I have yet to see.
Talking of films I missed, Maestro was the only one of the major films I didn't get around to, and not through a lack of opportunity. To be fair, I really couldn't be arsed sitting through it when there was so much more stuff I deemed worthier. Good job as it left empty-handed tonight, so I can pat myself on the back at having safely not bothered. I expect I will catch up with it at some point this year, but it remains elusive on the list of 'movies to-do'.
Altogether, this was a little too predictable, but on the plus side, there was little for Greta Gerwig to get excited about, unless you included Billie Eilish winning Best Song. I still contend Barbie was a repellent coiled turd of propaganda and it deserved to be ignored. The fact that I sat through it should be praise enough, frankly. If anything deserved to come away with nothing, I think Barbie and not Maestro should have been picked out for such ignominy, and like I say, I haven't even seen Maestro.
